San Jose Pride Parade

8 AM - Caffe Soma
8:30 AM - Kickstands up

On Sunday, June 15, for the fourth straight year, the San Francisco Dykes on Bikes® Women's Motorcycle Contingent (SFDOBWMC) is leading a motorcycle run to San Jose's Gay Pride Parade “Laugh, Love and Be Proud”

This run is for women (used in the broadest /inclusive sense of that word) so as to increase the visibility of Dykes on Bikes® in the San Jose Pride Parade.

The parade starts at 10:30 AM. Meet at Caffe Soma at 1601 Howard St (just 2 blocks up from the Eagle Tavern), San Francisco at 8 AM. The caffe is open. Ride leaves at 8:30 AM sharp!

For South Bay Riders, meet the SFDOBWMC at the assembly area in San Jose ~9:30 AM, which is at the Victory Parking lot on S. Market St. between West St. John's and West Santa Clara.

You must have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance to ride in the parade. There is a $5 registration fee. I will bring registration forms and collect the fee from riders.

The San Jose Gay Pride Festival costs $15 to enter and the parking lot on Woz Way between W. San Carlos and Park Ave charged $5 to park last year (in previous years it was free).

For those of you who do not want to go to the festival, I will be leading the group to a local restaurant for brunch after the parade, and then for a ride in the South Bay. Details to be provided on Sunday, June 15.

If you are interested in riding down to San Jose or the ride afterwards, please RSVP to president@dykesonbikes.org that way I can plan for the ride, brunch, etc.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, June 15.

Regards,

Vick Germany

Golden Gate Guards
21st Annual Weekend Run
Toys in Boyland

The run is held at a camp in Mendocino (details on location to be provided with registration). The standard price is $170 (the early bird deadline has long since passed). For the price, you get 5 meals (Fri dinner thru Sunday b'fast), open bar, midnight snacks, motorcycle skills events/group rides, rustic tent cabins (so you don't need to bring your own tent), hot showers and flush toilets, play space (if your into that sort of thing--no worries if you are not), fun, games, awards, guest night show, run show, souvenir pin and mug. I understand the camp is up a dirt road about 7 miles. There will be an organized ride up to the camp on Friday (details will be provided after registration).

Although the theme of the run is "Toys in Boyland," the Guards are comprised of both men and women and women bikers are strongly encouraged to come on the run.

meet in front of the Castro Theatre

Alden Spafford's Memorial Ride

Depending on the weather, interested bikers will meet in front of the Castro Theatre this Saturday (April 14) at 9:30am and assemble for departure at 10:00am. The Ride Captain will be Brett of the Ad Hoc Riders. Since riding in the rain is not just uncomfortable but unsafe as well, the ride portion of the day on Saturday is subject to postponement to Sunday morning if rain is present on Saturday.

If you have any doubt, call Jeff Johnston at
510-432-4926 the morning of the ride.

The ride will go to Alice's Restaurant near La Honda, which happened to be a favorite of Alden’s and his last ride prior to his fatal trip to LA. Everyone will be on their own for lunch and conversation at Alice’s (who are expecting our group.) We will return to the SF Eagle Tavern at about 1:45pm.

The Memorial Celebration of Life for Alden will commence at 2:00pm at the Eagle Tavern. It will likely last no more than an hour but we will have the mic available for all who wish to add their memories and thoughts of Alden after the speakers on the brief program.

Satyrs M/C is hosting the Beer Bust at the Eagle on the next day, Sunday, April 15. Come and enjoy the fun, the drink, and the cheeseburgers.

If rain forces the ride on Saturday to postpone until Sunday, the same time schedule for the ride will apply and give us plenty of time to enjoy the beer bust that afternoon. Sunday’s weather looks quite nice.

Ride to Alice’s:

NOTES: A good man, a fellow motorcyclist, a member of the Satyrs MC, and an associate member of the Golden Gate Guards, Alden was killed in a motorcycle accident on I-5 in February.

Check out Alden's website for information about the man aspafford.net/index.html.

Many of the Dykes on Bikes organizing members knew Alden and will miss him dearly.

Dykes on Bikes® powerfully embodies how lesbians have stood at the forefront of queer pride for 30 years. The exhibit "30 Years at the Forefront," hosted by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society, uses a significant anniversary to look back and commemorate this anchor SF institution that has become internationally renowned. The exhibit also looks forward and celebrates the landmark legal victory Dykes on Bikes® recently won, securing full ownership over its name.

The exhibit is accompanied by a series of events, including a donor preview on April 24th, a gala opening reception on May 15th, a reception co-hosted by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) on May 31st, and a Pride week reception on June 26th, among others.

The "30 Years at the Forefront" exhibit invites the general public to revel in the mythic power of Dykes on Bikes®. Exhibit attendees can even get a feel for riding in the famed contingent by hopping on a motorcycle surrounded by the sights and sounds of past parades. Along with the fun, the exhibit also offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the organization’s ride down a 30-year road: its history, mission, structure, annual event production, and international reach.

The exhibit also hopes to spur past and present members of Dykes on Bikes® to collectively remember and celebrate their history, and in so doing locate and archive otherwise uncollected memorabilia, documents, photographs, and artifacts of the organization’s last 30 years.

Leather Leadership Conference
San Francisco

Early Registration pricing ends Feb 29th for Leather Leadership Conference 12 in San Francisco.  Currently, registration for the three-day event is $109, and will increase to $134 on March 1.

LLC, a once-a-year national event that helps develop and strengthen leadership skills within the BDSM/Leather/Kink community, is being held April 11-13, 2008 in San Francisco.

LLC 12 will feature nationally recognized presenters including titleholders, artists, activists, authors and some really twisted, kinky people - all with fire and passion.

The Opening speaker will be Guy Baldwin, noted author and leather activist. The Saturday speaker will be Michael Thorn, Editor-in-Chief of Instigator Magazine. Closing speaker on Sunday will be Patrick Califia, noted author and outspoken advocate for BDSM.   Close to fifty presentations during the weekend will include subjects such as “Understanding sexual freedom as a leather leader,” “Putting the sex back into leather,” “Intersections of kink, poly and queer,” "Event planning without tantrum and tears" and much more. A poster session, a higher learning track and networking opportunities are also scheduled.

The theme for LLC 12 is “Arouse!,” and the goal is a fun, inspiring, evolving and sexy weekend appropriate for those new to the scene, those new to leadership and seasoned organizers in need of inspiration and spark.

We Remember: A fund-raiser for America's 9/11 Foundation College Scholarship Program for the Children of First Responders

Dear Friends:

As you may know, on August 16th hundreds of bikers will gather in Sommerset, PA, site of the crash of United Flight #93. They will then ride down to Washington, DC, and the Pentagon. On August 18, they will travel to Ground Zero of the World Trade Center in New York. Why are they doing this? To honor the First Responders – Fire, Police and EMS – who placed their lives on the line on September 11, 2001, and who do so each and every day. They also are raising funds to support America’s 9/11 Foundation College Scholarship Program for the Children of First Responders.

Many of us here in California and America’s Southwest can’t make the trip to the East at this time. But a more modest bike ride in solidarity with our biker friends back there is possible. To that end, a group of us in San Diego are calling for a ride to end here in San Diego the weekend of September 7 – 9, 2007.

We hope your club members will consider coming the weekend of September 7. If you will come, please let me know the approximate number of riders so we can have enough food and parking spaces.

For more information, or if you have questions, about the August ride go to americas911ride.org.

For information on the bike run to San Diego, contact russm92107@hotmail.com.

Thanks and look forward to you visiting San Diego,

Russ Mortenson

Relay For Life

Hello Friends,

Proud MomI'm "Proud Mom" and every year for the pass seven years (except one) I have ridden with my daughter Vick Germany, President of the SF Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent in the Pride Parade. She asked me to ride the first time because I had been diagnosed and operated on for colon cancer the previous year. The big "C" and it scared her not to mention me. The first time I rode with her, I was amazed at the response I got from the crowd. People were yelling out “Hey Proud Mom” and afterwards so many people came up to tell me stories about how they wished their mothers were as supportive. I told Vick she had created a monster and I wanted to ride every year.

Well, along with my annual ride in the parade, I walk in the Relay For Life to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. I have met so many wonderful people on my rides and know so many of you have expressed appreciation for the support. So, I guess I'm putting the bite on for fund raising.  My walk this year is on August 25th in Rio Vista. I’m not computer savvy, so I don’t have an on-line account for donations, so I would appreciate it if you would send a check, made payable to American Cancer Society or ACS and mail it to:

Patricia Robinson
556 Birch Ridge Dr.
Rio Vista, Ca. 94571

Please send checks by August 25. I will ride until age (I’m 71) says I can't, then maybe Vick can pull me along in a wagon. Thanks all for wonderful times!

Sincerely,

Pat (aka Proud Mom)
