April 14, 2007
9:30 am
meet in front of the Castro Theatre
Alden Spafford's Memorial Ride
Depending on the weather, interested bikers will
meet in front of the Castro Theatre this Saturday (April 14)
at 9:30am and assemble for departure at 10:00am. The Ride Captain
will be Brett of the Ad Hoc Riders. Since riding in the rain is
not just uncomfortable but unsafe as well, the ride portion of the
day on Saturday is subject to postponement to Sunday morning if
rain is present on Saturday.
If you have any doubt, call Jeff Johnston at 510-432-4926 the morning of the ride.
The ride will go to Alice's Restaurant near
La Honda, which happened to be a favorite of Alden’s and his
last ride prior to his fatal trip to LA. Everyone will be on their
own for lunch and conversation at Alice’s (who are expecting
our group.) We will return to the SF Eagle Tavern at about
1:45pm.
The Memorial Celebration of Life for Alden will commence
at 2:00pm at the Eagle Tavern. It will likely last no more
than an hour but we will have the mic available for all who wish
to add their memories and thoughts of Alden after the speakers on
the brief program.
Satyrs M/C is hosting the Beer Bust at the Eagle
on the next day, Sunday, April 15. Come and enjoy the fun, the drink,
and the cheeseburgers.
If rain forces the ride on Saturday to postpone until
Sunday, the same time schedule for the ride will apply and give
us plenty of time to enjoy the beer bust that afternoon. Sunday’s
weather looks quite nice.

Dykes on Bikes® powerfully embodies how lesbians have stood at the forefront of queer pride for 30 years. The exhibit "30 Years at the Forefront," hosted by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society, uses a significant anniversary to look back and commemorate this anchor SF institution that has become internationally renowned. The exhibit also looks forward and celebrates the landmark legal victory Dykes on Bikes® recently won, securing full ownership over its name.
The exhibit is accompanied by a series of events, including a donor preview on April 24th, a gala opening reception on May 15th, a reception co-hosted by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) on May 31st, and a Pride week reception on June 26th, among others.
The "30 Years at the Forefront" exhibit invites the general public to revel in the mythic power of Dykes on Bikes®. Exhibit attendees can even get a feel for riding in the famed contingent by hopping on a motorcycle surrounded by the sights and sounds of past parades. Along with the fun, the exhibit also offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the organization’s ride down a 30-year road: its history, mission, structure, annual event production, and international reach.
The exhibit also hopes to spur past and present members of Dykes on Bikes® to collectively remember and celebrate their history, and in so doing locate and archive otherwise uncollected memorabilia, documents, photographs, and artifacts of the organization’s last 30 years.
This is were over 400 Dykes on Bikes® nearly take over Market St from one end of the parade
route to the other. This is day where we proudly and loudly proclaim who
we are to the world!

Closing speaker on Sunday will be Patrick Califia, noted author and outspoken advocate for BDSM. A poster session, a higher learning track and networking opportunities are also scheduled.

We Remember: A fund-raiser for America's 9/11
Foundation College Scholarship Program for the Children of First
Responders
Dear Friends:
As you may know, on August 16th hundreds of bikers
will gather in Sommerset, PA, site of the crash of United Flight
#93. They will then ride down to Washington, DC, and the Pentagon.
On August 18, they will travel to Ground Zero of the World Trade
Center in New York. Why are they doing this? To honor the First
Responders – Fire, Police and EMS – who placed their
lives on the line on September 11, 2001, and who do so each and
every day. They also are raising funds to support America’s
9/11 Foundation College Scholarship Program for the Children of
First Responders.
Many of us here in California and America’s
Southwest can’t make the trip to the East at this time. But
a more modest bike ride in solidarity with our biker friends back
there is possible. To that end, a group of us in San Diego are calling
for a ride to end here in San Diego the weekend
of September 7 – 9, 2007.
We hope your club members will consider coming the
weekend of September 7. If you will come, please let me know the
approximate number of riders so we can have enough food and parking
spaces.
For more information, or if you have questions, about
the August ride go to americas911ride.org.

I'm
"Proud Mom" and every year for the pass seven years (except
one) I have ridden with my daughter Vick Germany, President of the SF Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle
Contingent in the Pride Parade. She asked me to ride the first time
because I had been diagnosed and operated on for colon cancer the
previous year. The big "C" and it scared her not to mention
me. The first time I rode with her, I was amazed at the response
I got from the crowd. People were yelling out “Hey Proud Mom”
and afterwards so many people came up to tell me stories about how
they wished their mothers were as supportive. I told Vick she had
created a monster and I wanted to ride every year.
Well, along with my annual ride in the parade, I
walk in the Relay For Life to raise funds for the American
Cancer Society. I have met so many wonderful people on my rides
and know so many of you have expressed appreciation for the support.
So, I guess I'm putting the bite on for fund raising. My walk
this year is on August 25th in Rio Vista. I’m
not computer savvy, so I don’t have an on-line account for
donations, so I would appreciate it if you would send a check, made
payable to American Cancer Society or ACS and mail
it to:
Patricia Robinson
556 Birch Ridge Dr.
Rio Vista, Ca. 94571
Please send checks by August 25. I will ride
until age (I’m 71) says I can't, then maybe Vick can pull
me along in a wagon. Thanks all for wonderful times!
